6. Jesus – His Resurrection

If Jesus had not apparently risen from the dead, we probably wouldn’t even have heard of him. But his resurrection changes everything. As we’ve seen, God sent Jesus to die on a cross because of our sin. If Christ’s death on the cross brings us forgiveness, what does his subsequent resurrection add to that? Let me ask you a question to get the ball rolling: ‘How do you know for certain that you have eternal life?’

Funerals of young people are always particularly moving, and the first one I ever took was for a musician called Stuart Spencer. He died of cancer in his thirties. He was a deeply committed Christian, however, so the tone of our final meeting, just three days before he died, was much calmer than you’d expect. Nevertheless, I was emotional, and I blurted out what was on my mind.

(It was one of those moments where immediately afterwards you think to yourself, ‘Did I just say that out loud?’) I said to him, ‘Stuart, what’s it like to die?’ His answer was as simple as it was unexpected: ‘Rico, Christ has risen from the dead.’

1 Thessalonians chapter 4 verse 14 explains that just as Christ died and rose again, so Christians, when they die, will rise again:

We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
